There are a few ways to tell, the best three ways to tell if a power point is faulty are, it won’t feed any power to the electrical appliance that is plugged in, the switch wont toggle or hold its position when pushed or it is visually damaged on the mechanism.

Can I plug anything into my power points at home?

If the lead fits into the socket without any DIY modification it is generally safe to plug in. However, if you have too many appliances plugged in and on the same power circuit you can overload it, which causes the protective device to turn off the power.
